Egyptian Themed Birthday Party

Filed under: Birthday Party Secrets — Joseph Then @ 5:46 am

It’s a nice and unique idea to have a themed Egypt party. From mummies and pyramids to pharohs and scarabs there is plenty of room to play with. You must remember that the goal here is for the children to have fun, not to be frightened. As such, remember to keep the scary stuff to a minimum if possible (even if your child is brave to a fault that doesn’t mean that some of the guests won’t be frightened).

Decorations for Egypt themed party are not as difficult as you may think. In fact, some of these decorations will double quite nicely for Halloween or may already be in your Halloween stash. First of all, if you have a canopy or tent lying around this will make an excellent substitution for a pyramid. You can fill your canopy or tent with relics that are authentic looking for what would be inside an Egyptian pyramid. Use skulls (leftover from Halloween decorations) on the floor, gold coins (or doubloons, which can be purchased rather inexpensively at many party supply stores), sequins that look like jewels, and fake jewelry that might have been worn during the period. Of course the piece de resistance will be the mummy wrapped in the corner (if this isn’t part of your Halloween stash it should be after this).

If you are still looking for excellent activities you can bury treasure in your sandbox (if you have one) and let them all take turns digging up treasures and/or artifacts that they can take home with them. Make sure everyone has at least one turn and gets one thing to take home from the digging.

You can either barbecue dinner or order pizza or something simple for dinner. I recommend letting the guests eat inside the pyramid for fun (if it isn’t too terribly hot) and allow for a showing of The Mummy afterwards (provided the audience is old enough and interested). You could also allow them to play in the tomb for a while or make it an overnight event and allow them to camp in the tomb if it’s a tent.

Great goody bag gifts include flashlights, glow sticks, spiders, chocolate coins, stickers, and other candy jewelry. One great game for an Egyptian themed birthday party would be wrap the mummy. Divide the children into groups of three and have them take turns racing to wrap the mummy (a member of the team) in toilet paper. Do this so that everyone has the opportunity to be wrapped - just be sure to use the cheap brands of toilet paper for this particular project and plan on having plenty in case they get a little overzealous.

Most importantly you want to plan an event that is fun to participate in and that will have all your guests eager to come back for the big birthday bash next year. Just remember you’ll be expected to top the current theme and might gain a reputation for throwing the cool parties.

Camping Birthday Party Ideas

Filed under: Birthday Party Secrets — Joseph Then @ 3:58 pm

It’s typical of boys to often dream of sleepovers that are held beneath the stars. There are many ways this can be incorporated into a birthday theme if your boy is a ‘out-going’ kid. No matter what age, there is something that boys find fascinating about sleeping in the great outdoors and a camping birthday party is a great way to do this, even if the great outdoors is just at your own back yard.

A favorite theme among those holding camping birthday parties is that of a trail ride. With this you can bring your gear along with you, ride horses, cook, eat, and sleep under the stars. If you don’t have a trail ride, horses, or long trails in the wilderness nearby don’t despair. With a Dutch oven, an open fire, a few sticks, and little bit of imagination you can have your very own cowboy camp out birthday bash celebration. Be sure to include a few tall tales to share around the campfire. Now might be a great time to brush up on your Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill stories.

A military camping birthday party is another great camping party idea. Right now boys need good solid heroes and the military is a great place to find them. (It also adds to educate the boys about the soldiers who are out of the country on peace-keeping mission) If you have friends or family that are serving over seas this might be a great way to help your little guy bring them closer to home for an evening and could be the best birthday memory he’ll ever have.

So remember to set up pup tents, visit your local military supply or surplus store for MREs (meals ready to eat), have everyone wearing their favorite camouflage, and have an army green face painting contest before bed time. Some of your friends (or YOU!) may be working as a military personnal and so you can get some of the items cheap or ‘free’. :)

A safari camping theme is another great theme for a terrific camping birthday party. Begin by having everyone dress appropriately for a day underneath the hot African sun, khakis, and an appropriate hat work well. Create a safari pack (goody bag) for all the kids including really chip binoculars, a net for catching stray bugs (really great for lightening bugs at night), safari themed stickers, and a picture frame that is worthy of a fearless safari adventurer (you’ll definitely want to send them home with photos of their safari attire). Set up camp for the evening and serve animal crackers for dessert. You can populate the tent with stuffed animals of favorite safari animals and supplement the adventure with a trip to the zoo for even grander effect and more fun.

If none of these are getting you very excited you could always go with a Rocky Mountain sort of theme for your camping birthday party. Be sure to have plenty of stuffed black bears and have everyone wear red flannel and denim. This is a great and fun sort of adventure for the little men in your life and a great fun party idea. It also presents a few wonderful photo ops for souvenirs and your very own memory book. Have the tents pitched in the backyard and the grill should be set up to feed your hungry mountaineers. If you are fortunate enough to have a creek on your property or live very near one you could even have your ‘adventurers’ go panning for gold.

Camping-themed birthday party presents endless opportunities to put your imagination to work. Also, you’ll be surprise if you ask your kid for some camping ideas! Even if the weather doesn’t want to cooperate, you can still bring your great outdoor adventure inside and still have a great time. If you live in an apartment or an area in which you are uncomfortable having a camp out, there’s no reason you can’t have a wonderful camp “in”.

Top Tips for Planning Your Party Like a Professional

Filed under: Birthday Party Secrets — Joseph Then @ 4:57 pm

Entertaining people in your home is always wrought with a bit of stress and anxiety. Simply getting everything ready before the party is enough to make most people pull out their hair. And, the self-doubt and worry about last minute details is enough to send most people over the edge of comfort. However, planning your party does not need to be this way. Here are ten time tested tips to help you plan the best party with the least possible pre-party stress.

Tip #1 – The best thing you can do for yourself is to write down a master party shopping list and a list of what needs to be accomplished around your home before the date of the party. Get out a calendar and mark off some time to shop and clean your home.

Tip #2 – Enlist the help of your spouse or children in the process of cleaning and de-cluttering your home for the party. While they may not do the “perfect” job that you would, you can always go back with a quick vacuum or dust cloth and finish up the job later.

Tip #3 – When your guests arrive they will need a place to hang their coats and place their purses. One of the easiest things you can do is to clean out your entry-hall coat closet for them to use. If you have a bunch of stuff in there, then you should either find it a new home or box it up until after your party is over.

Tip #4 – When you shop, think about if you will want to send home leftovers with your guests. If you will, then you should pick-up some inexpensive containers which you can send home food in and not have to worry about retrieving your plates or bowls at a later date.

Tip #5 – It is also nice to plan for enough leftovers from your party that you will not have to cook or prepare food on the day after your party. Let’s face it, the day after your party you will be exhausted, and by not having to cook you can relax and enjoy the day with your family.

Tip #6 – When you go to the store to purchase the non-perishables for your party, you can leave them in the grocery bags until the day before the party. Rather than unpack everything and put it away in your cupboards where people might mistakenly eat it, you can simply leave everything in the bags and keep them in an out of the way place until the day before the party. (I highly suggest looking at everything the day before and making sure you didn’t forget something at the store which is vital. This will keep you from having to make emergency store runs on the day of your party when you have other things to do.)

Tip #7 – If you are having an evening party near the Christmas holiday season, you might want to get together ahead of time with your friends and organize a cookie exchange. By doing this you can have tons of different cookies to offer your guests, even though you only had to make one kind of them.
Tip #8 – If your guests will be drinking wine, it is a great idea to use some inexpensive wine glass charms. This will allow your guests to always know which glass is theirs and keeps them from using too many other glasses. Put the charms on before your party to save time when you are serving your guest’s drinks.

Tip #9 – One of the best things you can do when planning your party is to ask other people to bring food or beverages. Many times people ask what they can bring, and you should take them up on their offers. Not only does this cut-down on the budget for your party, it also allows you to spend less time cooking and more time with your guests.

Need to print invitation cards?

Filed under: Birthday Party Secrets — Joseph Then @ 8:10 am

Do you need invitation cards? Sometimes this can be a headache. However, depending on the venue, some venues gives invitation cards (which in turn promotes their company) but if you are holding the party at home you may need help.

You can buy the invitation cards from party stores or print them out yourself. If you don’t know how to design, how do you print it out?

Simple, just go to Google and make a search “print birthday card” or “birthday invitation card template” and you will find tons of them! Many of them are printer-ready and some will even print out your child’s name!

Make a search and you will be surprised with what you will find!

What To Do Before Birthday Party Starts

Filed under: Birthday Party Secrets — Joseph Then @ 5:05 pm

Are you ready for your kid’s birthday party? If you are like many parents, they don’t even know if they are ready.

Being ready for your child’s birthday party is important. The best way you can be sure to be ready is to start planning early and stick to your plan. Kids can help you with your plans but don’t plan on them being much help. The party is too exciting for a child to stay focused.

Four hours before the birthday party
On the day of the party you will want to make sure the house is ready. Start decorating 4 or 5 hours before the party. Locate all of the supplies for your games and crafts. Make sure you have enough punch and other snacks to go along with your cake. Set up a few extra places just in case someone else shows up. You should check the list and see who hasn’t RSVP yet and if you have their number call and see if they are able to show up. Not only the more the merrier but you will want to be ready for the crowd.

Three hours before the birthday party
Set the tables with napkins, glasses, and forks/spoons. The plates can be set in a stack near the cake so they are available when you are serving. You can make place cards if you want assigned seats. These can include party favors that the children can take home. If you have any last minute dishes you need to whip up now is the time to make sure they are ready.

Two hours before the birthday party
It is time to put clean up and get ready for the party. By this time you already have the decorations up and the games set up. The cake is ready and food is ready. You need to dress yourself for the party.

If possible, add balloon outside your house so that it makes it easier for your guests to find your place. I know of parents who actually tie balloons from the main road all the way to their house.

Do have a gifts table near the entrance so that when your kid receives the present they can put it on the table. This table can also serve as a place to put your party bags so that when the guests leave they can take the party bags.

One hour before the birthday party
Dress the kids, including the birthday boy or girl, and make sure everyone’s hair is combed and faces are washed. You should have an activity set up so you can start the party as soon as guests show up. The first activity should be a simple quiet activity to keep everyone’s attention while keeping them together in one area, like coloring. As guests show up you will want one person assigned to get the door.

You may need to assign someone the phone as well, especially if your home is difficult to find.

Enjoy the party!

Birthday Party Games For Kids of Mixed Ages (4-10 years old)

Filed under: Birthday Party Secrets — Joseph Then @ 2:18 pm

Birthday parties with a mixture of ages, especially with young kids are challenging for parents. One of the ways I have found to deal with this situation to make sure everyone has fun is to team younger kids and older kids together.

Outdoor birthday party games

Where the weather permits, it will be a great idea to play games outdoor. Your backyard or the park are some of the great outdoor locations for games.

Treasure Hunts
Treasure hunts are really fun because they are friendly at the same time competitive in nature. You hide your “treasures” before the hunt, obviously. :) One of the ways we have found that kids really get a kick out of is having them find naturally occurring items. For instance, give them a list of a torn leaf, roley poley bug, round rock and a feather and see who can find all of the items first.

Another way to play the game ‘intellectually’ is to have them find “treasures of knowledge”. Give each player a list of questions and a time limit to see who can get more of the answers or make it unlimited and the first to complete the list wins. These questions can be simple observation (ie: how many windows are in our home) to getting to know each other (ie: what is the name of the person to your right).

Red Rover
Ok, this might sound like an old game but the kids love to play red rover. I use this as a game in-between other games. The kids can play this to keep each other occupied while I am getting the next game set up. It gets some of the wiggles out of the littler kids and keeps the bigger kids from getting bored.

Make two human chains and stand opposite of each other. Then one team says in unison, “Red Rover, Red Rover send (insert kid’s name) right over.” They pick one of the people on the other sides name who they think will not be able to break through. Then they will run and try to break through your arm but you don’t want them too because you get to keep them if they don’t break through. When you have all the people from the other team in your team you win.

Indoor birthday party games

These are some of the games that you can play in the house.

Crowns/party hats
You will need party hats to go with your noise makers. Construction paper, glue, tape, glitter and a pair of scissors is all you need to make party hats or crowns for everyone. You can have the kids color the hats and even glue beads and flitter to them then you can take the tape, roll the paper up to make a circular band (to go around the kid’s head) and tape together in the back. If you want to make hats instead of crowns you should roll so that they hats are pointy like a snow cone cup. Elastic or yarn can be stapled to the sides so that the hat can be held on.

Noise Maker Craft
Once you have colored your pages the kids can use them to build a craft. We like to make noisy crafts if we are working with mostly young kids. Take two Styrofoam plates and a few beans; glue the plates together so that they are facing each other with the beans between them. Decorate with the colored pages, or other colored bits of beans, pasta, beads, paper or even glue and glitter. These can be used to make noise during the party.

Coloring contest
One of the simplest and most ‘hands-off game’ is to conduct a coloring contest. A coloring contest is a great game because it does take up time. Kids of all ages can color and then an appointed official (a mom or an older kid) can judge the art work.
